Clifton Hospital

Clifton is a small town of about 1100 residents that lies about 40km south of Toowoomba. It was named after the Clifton pastoral property in 1943 and was developed due to the opening of the railway line in the late 1860s. By the 1880s, Clifton was a thriving little community with churches opening, school of arts and shire office. The soil was suitable for growing wheat and supported the development of the dairy industry in the region. The population grew through the 1980s due to its popularity as a residence for people commuting to Toowoomba for work.

The town itself has a swimming pool, three hotels, four churches, schools, police station, numerous specialty stores. The town has a bowls club, gold course and an annual race meeting which keeps the locals entertained.  The Darling Downs Zoo is a major attraction for the Clifton region. The zoo has a massive range of animals such as monkeys, crocodiles, llamas, marmosets, baboons and lions to name a few.

The Southern Downs has a higher proportion of children, older people and males than the state average. There is also a high proportion of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals (29%) a culturally diverse population with evidence of poor proficiency in English. The major causes of illness and death are coronary health disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), depression and lung cancer. The health determinants which drive these trends are harmful levels of alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, poor nutrition, socioeconomic disadvantage, physical inactivity and mental health risk factors.

A medical centre and a small private hospital provide medical services to the community. The hospital provides aromatherapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, optometry and a child/women’s/aged care team. The Clifton Medical Centre provides qualified general practitioners to the town, and has a close connection to the rural medical network. Other medical services can be provided through Toowoomba which is very close by.   Transport through Clifton is provided by Queensland buses which provide a shuttle service to and from Toowoomba.
