Beaudesert has a population of over 5000 people and is situated 60 kilometres west of Brisbane in the Scenic Rim. The scenic rim has six National Parks, four of which are World Heritage Listed. It was thought that the mountain ranges of this area were formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago and this has also contributed to producing very fertile soil, full of nutrients for the native flora to thrive. The town is a strong farming, cattle and dairy district which is also home to many Queensland’s retired thoroughbred horses.  While farming is still prominent in the region today, the population has expanded due to many residents escaping the cities for a quieter way of life. Beaudesert has a small shopping centre with a Coles supermarket, Target Country and various other specialty stores.

The town is positioned around a main street which has various cafes, restaurants and take-away food outlets. Surrounding the town are areas suitable for bush-walking, camping and bird-watching. For more excitement and a wider variety of shopping and entertainment experiences, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are just an hour’s drive away. Beaudesert falls into the Metro South Health District. This region has a population that has a large proportion of people aged between 20 and 30 years. Two percent of the population identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander who have a 13 year difference in health-adjusted life expectancy. Nearly a quarter of the population of this region were born overseas with the dominant number coming from New Zealand and United Kingdom.

The primary cause of death in this region is ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and cancer, however, the major reason for presentation to hospital was for renal dialysis, chemotherapy, colonoscopy and mental health treatment. Beaudesert has a 22 bed hospital which opened in the year 2000. It offers a 24-hour emergency service, general medicine, surgical services, mental health and indigenous health. The nearest tertiary referral centre is in the Gold Coast University Hospital or hospitals in Brisbane. Logan Coaches provides a bus service to the Beaudesert region. Otherwise, the area can be accessed by car and connects to major airports in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
