• Withcott Medical Centre

Withcott is a small friendly rural town only eleven kilometres from Toowoomba and less than thirty kilometres from Gatton, two major regional centres in Queensland. The town is in close proximity to Table Top Mountain. The population was recorded as 1401 residents in 2011 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The town was overcome by flash flooding from the Gatton Creek in 2011. Like many towns in the region, residents were evacuated and some rescued by emergency helicopter services. The town of Withcott has a variety of local shops and services, a pre-school and primary school, a bustling hotel, a fruit and vegetable market and several petrol stations. Withcott has its own community news service. The Lockyer Valley region is a popular tourism destination, especially for city dwellers to escape for a relaxing country experience. There are fresh produce restaurants and cafes, history museums, art galleries, national parks and adventure activities such as hot air ballooning, sky diving and horse riding. For people interested in water sports, Lake Dyer and Lake Apex are fantastic locations, with Lake Apex being home to over 150 species of birds.

This region has a higher proportion of children, older people and males than the state average. There is also a high proportion of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals (29%) a culturally diverse population with evidence of poor proficiency in English. The health determinants which drive these trends are harmful levels of alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, poor nutrition, socioeconomic disadvantage, physical inactivity and mental health risk factors. Health services in Withcott include the Withcott Medical Centre. There are over five general practitioners who offer services from this centre, as well as a clinical psychologist and a physiotherapist. They are open business hours Monday to Friday plus Saturday mornings. The centre also has a skin cancer clinic every fortnight.

The nearby Toowoomba Hospital is a large 324 bed Queensland Health public hospital. It has all the usual medical services plus more specialities including: intensive and coronary care, surgery, dialysis services, stroke and rehabilitation service, Ear, Nose and Throat surgery and a CT scanner.
